Gelatin silver print mounted on the photographer's beige mat with his blind-embossed logo; signed on the mat by Masaryková, with the date, 3 November 1922 (image oxidized, corners of the mat bumped, with some reinforcements on verso, 12 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. overall, the photo 6 x 4 1/4 in.

Working in Czechoslovakia during and between the world wars, Masaryková applied lessons learned from Julia Lathrop, Mary McDowell and Jane Addams at the University of Chicago Social Settlement. Despite coming under scrutiny of the government, being censored, serving time in jail and on house arrest, she was able to establish the first Bohemian welfare organization recognized by the ruling Austro-Hungarian regime.
